Logroņo, the capital of La Rioja, is a modern city with wide boulevards and elegant shops, a prolific centre of fertile plains where besides Rioja's wines, top quality produce is also grown.
In the beautiful historic part of Logroņo, with lovely side streets, is the Gothic cathedral with twin towers. Above the southern faįade of the nearby Santiago el Real Church there is a Baroque equestrian statue of Santiago Matamoros.
Some 50 km South of Logroņo, the N-111 highway winds through the Iregua valley passing through tunnels and gullies and under intricate boulders, before climbing the Cameros Sierra.
