 | | Felipe V ordered the construction of The Royal Palace by Sachetti, Italian architect and disciple of Juvarra, and the chief European artists of the XVIII century also intervened in its design. In its numerous rooms one can reflect on works by Tiépolo, Lucas Jordán, Mengs and Goya. Its armoury is considered as one of the world's most important. The "Campo del Moro" gardens extend from the river. |
The "Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales" in Madrid occupies the former palace where Carlos I and Isabel de Portugal resided and where, in 1535 their daughter princess Juana was born. Isabel de Portugal, widow of the prince of Portugal, founded in 1557 this convent of Franciscan barefooted nuns.
She is buried in a chapel, with funeral sculpture made by Pompeyo Leoni.

 | | The Almudena Cathedral, located opposite the Royal Palace, was consecrated by Juan Pablo II on June 15th, 1993.
In spite of this date, the idea of providing Madrid with a grand cathedral (service that fulfilled the Church of the San Isidro School), had already existed for more than a century.
The temple arose upon terrain handed over by Alfonso XII that had been occupied by the Santa Maria parish church, where the medieval image of "Our Lady of the Almudena", patron saint of Madrid was honoured.
