In Madrid's Plaza Mayor, we find buildings of monumental character. Initiated according to layouts by Juan de Herrera for the Arrabal plaza, its current configuration was arranged by Juan Gómez de Mora between 1617 and 1619, with the "Casa de la Panadería" as midpoint of the composition.
The Plaza Mayor, which until the previous century acted as a daily market, was at times, the scene for public events from bullfights to burnings in which the Inquisition judged its persecuted, patron saint processions with rogations or the scene of capital executions and celebrations with dances and theatre. Under the arches there's a plentiful amount of shops dedicated to cloths, imitation jewellery, taverns, a stamp market and during Christmas festivities a nativity scene market and typical Christmas articles.
